Caldwell County is also home to
a rich diversity of historic attractions chronicling its unique
history, dating back to the Revolutionary War:

Antique Vending Company — one of the world’s
largest private collections of vintage antique soda machines.

Bernhardt-Seagle Hardware — the
second-oldest hardware store in the country, established
in 1829.

Caldwell Heritage Museum — a
chronological history of Caldwell County from pre-colonial
days to the present, including Native American spears and
arrowheads, early maps, grants and deeds.

Chapel of Rest — located in the Patterson
School Historic District, both the chapel and its cemetery
are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Coffey’s
General Store — an historic
collection of antiques, the original post office, store fixtures
and photographs of Mortimer and Edgemont from the early 1900s.

Fort Defiance — the restored home of
General William Lenoir, famed captain of the 1780 Battle
of Kings Mountain, which is listed on the National Registry
of Historic places.

Museum — features
local transportation memorabilia and history from the Granite
Falls area.

Park & Hudson
Railroad Depot Museum — a
renovated depot originally built around the turn of the 20th
century and used as a train station until the 1970s.

Hog Waller Marketplace — an historic
market on the streets of downtown Lenoir, originally used
for trading during the mid1900s.

Laura Foster Grave — the final resting place
of the tragic heroine of the Tom "Dooley" Dula story
made famous in The Kingston Trio’s ballad “Hang
Down Your Head Tom Dooley."

Mortimer, Edgemont,
and Chester-Lenoir Railroad — from
1873 to 1970, the area was home to the Chester-Lenoir Railroad,
a narrow-gauge logging railroad which connected the large
logging mill town of Mortimer with the town of Edgemont,
where the original train depot still stands.

Country Store — a vintage
country store, established in 1924, located in the scenic
Buffalo Cove community.
